100 Year Chulongkorn University

The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is an intellectual powerhouse spanning traditional humanities and social science subjects to innovative and cutting-edge areas in Creative Arts and applied professional studies. With over 40% of research undertaken having been ranked in the Top 25% for their subject area in REF2014 and a further 40% in the Top 50% nationally, our postgraduate programmes are driven and delivered by world-leading scholars in their field.

Many of the Faculty’s Research Strengths are clustered around two recently established centres of excellence: The Institute for Collaborative Research in the Humanities and the Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation and Social Justice. Alongside these two leading centres, there are many other areas of notable excellence including Creative Writing, Sonic Arts, Global Financial Markets, Children’s Well-being, Poverty and Social Exclusion, Translation and Interpreting and Shared Education, all of which are investigated on a local and global scale. In this collaborative environment postgraduate students from all fields are offered the opportunity to interact with academic leaders and participate in their research.

The Faculty benefits from world-class facilities including the world’s only Sonic Arts Research Laboratory; a £14m state of the art building at Riddel Hall which is home to the Management School, a unique simulation Trading Room and the William J Clinton Leadership Institute; the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry within the School of English; and a purpose built film studio for Film Studies, as well as the Brian Friel Theatre. In addition to this, the Faculty will also benefit from a £20m investment in a new School of Law building which is due for completion in summer 2016.

This year sees the launch of our Global Research Institute. Under the leadership of Professor Hastings Donnan. The Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice brings together researchers from fields as diverse as Politics, Public Health, Planning and Computer Engineering. With a cross-national focus, including traditional and modern societies, and historical and contemporary cases, the institute seeks to help those who are struggling with the aftermath of conflict by empowering them to realise fairness, justice and tolerance.

We have a long and proud international history of collaboration and partnership across our teaching and research activity which supports student exchanges across the globe, including leading institutions in South East Asia, Brazil, China, North America and India.

With a huge range of postgraduate taught programmes on offer, including many new offerings for 2016 entry, as well and a vibrant postgraduate research culture with opportunities for study in over 25 disciplines, I am sure you will find a programme of study to both challenge and inspire you, as well as equipping you with the first-class skills and knowledge to excel in your chosen career.
